PRESS RELEASE :
THE ART GALLERY OF NOVA SCOTIA’S YARMOUTH LOCATION HOSTS THE DALHOUSIE ART GALLERY’S BOUNDARY-PUSHING EXHIBITION ON NOVA SCOTIAN REALIST ART
Yarmouth, NS, November 20, 2015 – The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is announcing the opening of Capture 2014: Nova Scotia Realism at its Yarmouth location. Initiated by Professional Living Artists of Nova Scotia (PLANS) and developed in partnership with the Dalhousie Art Gallery, Capture 2014 is curated by Tom Smart in consultation with Peter Dykhuis, Director and Curator of the Dalhousie Art Gallery, and will remain on view until May 15, 2016. Funding for curatorial research from the Robert Pope Foundation, with additional project support from the Craig Foundation, brought this exhibition to life.
“The exhibition at the Western Branch brings me great happiness. It is the fifth and final installment of a three-year project initiated by PLANS that began with my co-curator, Tom Smart, touring the province and visiting 43 artist studios. The first iteration of the exhibition, displayed at the Dalhousie Art Gallery in January of 2014, featured 28 artists,” shared Dykhuis. “This represents the perfect collaboration between partners: PLANS, the Dalhousie Art Gallery and the AGNS, who worked together to make something amazing happen in this province.”
Nova Scotian art has enjoyed a diverse history, with a consistent tradition of artists working in the Realist mode. From ship portraitists, landscape painters, and still life and trompe-l’oeil artists, to Magic Realists and those who work from photographic and digital sources, this pluralistic tradition is a vital part of Nova Scotian cultural identity. Visitors to the exhibition, which is located in the Yarmouth branch’s main gallery, can expect to see recent innovative works by Nova Scotian artists, and to experience an exhibition that questions received notions of the status and place of Realism in the contexts of current art practices and contemporary society.
An opening reception will take place at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia at 341 Main Street in Yarmouth, NS on Saturday, November 21 at 2 p.m. The reception will include many of the exhibition’s artists, in addition to the following speakers: Peter Dykhuis, Director and Curator with the Dalhousie Art Gallery; Lisa Bugden, Interim CEO of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia; and Stephen Rhude, one of the exhibition’s artists and a member of PLANS.
The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, which provided storage and shipping services for the last half of the Capture 2014 tour, will also present educational programming in support of the exhibition.
